    Paul Wharton(Author)
ARMY BOMB DISPOSAL operator Paul Wharton served in Northern Ireland on several occasions. This is a factual account of the dangers that operators faced when dealing with improvised explosive devices during that campaign. His account is supported by over 100 photographs. The book also explains how the passive type techniques used in the Hong Kong emergency of the mid 60's were gradually replaced during the Northern Ireland campaign by much more offensive bomb disposal methods and weaponry. This new approach would prove much more effective in dealing with improvised explosive devices and provide greater protection for the operators. The author explains why he believes the 17 Bomb Disposal Operators killed in the Northern Ireland campaign deserve more recognition than they received.

This book is a frank account of Paul Whartons experiences working in 321 EOD in Ulster. I too have experienced the same and would like to say it brought back long forgotten memories of my own tours in Ulster and a reminder of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. For some it may be a bit to technical about RSP's etc, but for those who have been there, done it and earned the Felix Tie, it is certainly a re-awakening of those times. I would say a'must have' book for all ATO's.

A good read! Paul Wharton's autobiographical book First Light is a great combination of the historical, technical and personal interlaced with subtle and sometimes self-deprecating humour on the very relevant and topical subject of bomb disposal.

A great insight into the life of a bomb disposal officer during a very demanding period for the trade. Couldnt put it down!Highly recommended

An amazing insight into the lives of bomb disposal operators, which has only increased my admiration of these BRAVE men.

An honest account of life on 321 EOD Unit (and I speak from experience) but it is surprising how boring this can be, even if you have a real interest. It almost persuaded me not to write my own memoirs. And yet it is a valuable addition to my library and a book every EOD operator will want to buy.
